Looking for a Birmingham PR agency?

I did a little experiment to see what companies could do to find a Birmingham based PR agency - giving myself five minutes, I went searching. My first stop was Google. I entered Birmingham PR agency and found three actual Birmingham agencies. The rest of the search results were directories with listings of agencies, one flash based site that I couldn't view on my phone and one Leicestershire agency.

Midlands PR agency – what types exist

We've been operating as a Midlands PR agency since 2006, so we're pretty new to the region. However, in that short time, we have tried to landscape the PR agency/PR consultancy sector here.

Here are our basic intial thoughts and of course we recognise that all agencies are different, so we may not all fit neatly into one of these categories. Comments welcomed.

The big boys

There are a handful of large PR agencies which handle regional and national accounts. They seem to have a strong pedigree in property, retail and manufacturing related clients and tend to either be part of a national franchise (Freshwater/McCann Erikson) or are owned by one/two (Bright, Wyatt, Willoughby) people. These agencies produce outstanding work which easily rivals London and Manchester based PR agency work.

Why do PR agencies take on clients they shouldn’t?

Money? Self belief? Misguided self-belief? Unwillingness to pass the business to another agency that may do better? Any more?

So why do I care? Well I have spoken to two companies over the last few weeks and both have been disappointed by their first foray into PR. This unfortunately makes it harder for other PR agencies to convince them that PR can benefit a company.
